SOLDIER SPRING PARK
961 Charles Street, 20 Thrush Street, Weatherford, Texas

Soldier Park
Soldier Spring Park is divided into two sections. The upper section is a park accessed from Charles Street, while the lower section is accessed from Thrush Street. Weatherford citizens have utilized this park in many ways through the years and with the changes and improvements, the park has turned into a treasure to be enjoyed.

Soldier Spring Park historical marker
Soldier Spring Park offers a piece of history on display. During the Civil War era, the area which is now Soldier Spring Park was used as a campsite for Confederate Soldiers. Soldier Spring Park is designated with a Texas Historical Marker which reads "Confederate soldiers are said to have camped here in the 1860s because of the inviting spring. In 1890, veterans used the site for their 25th reunion. During the next year, 55 acres were set aside as Soldier Spring Park. After many years of neglect, civic groups joined to develop recreational facilities and restore the natural beauty with native plantings."

Soldier Spring Park historical markerThe most recognizable part of Soldier Spring Park are the seven lighted, age-appropriate baseball and softball fields. These fields can be reserved, with respect to Weatherford Little League's Schedule, by calling the City of Weatherford Parks, Recreation & Community Relations Office at 817-598-4124.

Soldier Spring Park tennis courts
Soldier Spring Park is also home to three lighted tennis courts, which are the lone municipal courts in Weatherford.

Soldier Spring Park trails
With access on Charles, Thrush and Russell Streets, Soldier Spring Park offers an excellent trail system for your enjoyment. The area offers over one mile of inter-connection asphalt and natural trails. While walking these trails, there is an excellent opportunity to see many different varieties of flora and fauna.

Soldier Spring Park playground
Soldier Spring Park has a playground built for hours of fun along with many areas to enjoy a picnic.

CHERRY PARK POOL PRIVATE PARTY RENTALS
Starting Monday, April 2 at 8:00 am, reservations for private pool rentals will be taken on a first come, first reserved basis at the Parks and Recreation Office located at 119 Palo Pinto Street. Reservations will be accepted over the phone or in person; HOWEVER, ON SITE RESERVATIONS WILL RECEIVE FIRST PRIORITY. Due to the popularity of private pool rentals, individuals making reservations by phone on April 2 will provide a name and phone number to staff, who will then document the time of the call and the requested date for the rental. In order to maintain a single calendar, which ultimately prevents double bookings, staff will return calls for requests after 1:00 pm. Please note, all calls will be returned in the order of which they were received.

The Cherry Park Pool can be rented Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights between 7:45 pm - 9:45 pm, beginning Friday, June 1 through Sunday, August 19. Reservations must be paid in full no later than ten business days after making the reservation; otherwise, the reservation will be canceled without notice and available for booking.

Due to high demand, only one reservation per person or group will be allowed each season. Only persons 18 years of age or older may make a reservation. All general pool rules and policies apply to private rentals.

Guests may not use their own lifeguards; lifeguards are included in rental rates. Rental Rates are based on the number of guests through the front gate:

SEEK ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

South Main Street/SH 171/FM 51 will be reduced to two lanes of two-way traffic beginning Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

The lane closures allow for phase one of construction to begin. Phase one begins at the west bound IH-20 Frontage Road and continues north on South Main Street/SH 171/FM 51 to the vicinity of Cleburne Rd. The reduction in lanes will increase congestion throughout this stretch of roadway; therefore, we ask that you please consider alternate routes when feasible.  For your safety and the safety of all drivers, please heed all posted construction zone warnings and allow additional time for delays when traveling. As there continues to be construction in the area, please observe all warning signs and posted speed limits. If you have further questions or concerns contact Larry Wright at 817-565-7152. The City of Weatherford and the Texas Department of Transportation would like to extend gratitude to residents for their patience and tolerance throughout the construction of the traffic projects.

For SOUTH MAIN ALTERNATE ROUTES, please follow the link, which will take you directly to a PDF map on the City's website: www.weatherfordtx.gov/SouthMain.  This information can also be accessed from the City's home page: www.weatherfordtx.gov by looking on the left hand side for 'S Main Alternate Routes'.

DID YOU KNOW...
...that citizens requesting open records or public information from the City of Weatherford can make their request online?

When a citizen needs to fill out a form for the public information they are requesting, please feel free to ask them if they have internet access and, if so, please direct them to our website at www.weatherfordtx.gov/publicinfo. Or, at www.weatherfordtx.gov, they can go to "I Want To" on the top left, then down to "Request," then down to "Public Information." Both options lead to the same page.

This page provides the information they will need to submit their request, and links to online forms, or a paper form if they prefer. Please contact City Secretary, Malinda Nowell, 817-598-4202 or mnowell@weatherfordtx.gov, if you have any questions.

GRAND OPENING AT FIRST MONDAY FARM AND RANCH AREA
A ribbon cutting with the Chamber of Commerce was held Friday, March 2 at 3:00 pm at the new barn in the Farm and Ranch area on the First Monday Grounds. Thank you to all who attended and showed your support as we begin livestock sales at the First Monday Trade Days with "Growing an Old Tradition on a New Farm." In case you have not "heard," we have radio spots on 89.5 FM, 95.9 FM and 92.1 FM to advertise this monthly event and recruit Farm and Ranch vendors. We wish to thank Bob Glenn and Greg Shaw, two of our Parks Board members, for recording the spots for 89.5!

Several interested farm and ranch vendors have committed to sell, and a few farm and ranch attractions are secured for the March Trade Days. Antique tractors inspired farm enthusiasts with special restored models on display for Friday's ribbon cutting ceremony. Children had a blast riding the "train" brought by Mr. Hal Redfearn on Sunday at the event.  More attractions, more fun to come.

There are still a lot of vendor spaces available, so if you know someone who might be interested in becoming a farm and ranch vendor or a general vendor, please contact Karen King at 817-598-4351 or kking@weatherfordtx.gov to reserve a spot for the next First Monday Trade Days.

NEW YEAR, NEW LOOK FOR CITY WEBSITE
For the last several months, the City of Weatherford, along with our Web site content management company Civic Plus, has been redesigning the city's website. A team of city employees that manage the website for their respective departments worked together to create a design with the look and feel of "Weatherford, Texas."

A new feature in the Web site is a category titled "I Want to..." This category encompasses a variety of city services created to narrow your search into subheadings such as I Want To...apply for..., obtain..., read..., view..., and more. Parks and Recreation has created links to services within the department to assist you in navigating through activities offered:

FEATURES! In terms of activities available and sites to see, Holland Lake Park has something to interest everyone. This 40 acre park is second only to Cartwright Park in terms of acreage. Holland Lake Park's central location and plethora of activities make it a must visit for all residents.
Town Creek Hike & Bike Trail Head

Holland Lake Park Softball Complex
SOFTBALL! Holland Lake Park Softball Complex opened to the public in the Fall of 2009. The complex hosts many Parks and Recreation leagues and tournaments throughout the year. For more information on leagues or tournaments, or private reservations of ball fields, contact the Recreation Coordinator or check out the Adult Sports page.

Historic Holland Cabins

HISTORY! Holland Lake Park also has historic evidence of Parker County's rough and tumble past. On display are two double log cabins built in the mid-1800s and relocated to their current site. For more information please follow the link to Park Histories.

Camp Holland
ACTIVITY! Camp Holland is located within the borders of Holland Lake Park. Camp Holland received a breath of new life in the Fall of 2011 by local Boy Scouts who plan to use the site for many future events. Camp Holland will also soon be available for special event usage by outside patrons as well. For information on Camp Holland, call 817-598-4124.
Spring 2011 KIDFISH Participants

FISH! Holland Lake Park is the location of two youth fishing events every year, one in the Spring and one in the Fall. Holland Lake is also on the list of Texas Parks and Wildlife stock ponds; therefore, fresh stocks of new fish are added several times a year!
Fish commonly caught in the Lake include: Blue Catfish, Channel Catfish, Bass, Perch, and Trout weather permitting.

NEW! An additional fishing opportunity is hatching for Weatherford anglers as about 300 Rainbow trout are scheduled to be released into the pond at Holland Lake Park on December 6. "This is the first time trout have ever been stocked in our area," said Weatherford Parks and Recreation Director, Danielle Felts. The Crystal Lake Hatchery is set to release the trout mid-afternoon on December 6.

There will not be an organized fishing event in conjunction with the
stocking of trout. "In warm weather there are folks fishing Holland
Lake all of the time," Felts said. "The stocking of the trout will hopefully
increase the amount of people at the pond this time of year, and afford our community the opportunity and experience of catching trout without
leaving town."

Trout are not common in the area because they cannot survive in water with warmer temperatures for an extended period of time. The fish can survive in water temperatures below 70 degrees and in high-quality water with plenty of oxygen. Weather permitting, the trout should last until April 2012. Any left at that time will likely die because of the higher water temperatures; therefore, this is a "CATCH and KEEP" program! "Along with not surviving the warmer water temperatures, the trout are not going to reproduce. The trout stock is more about the experience and promoting people to get outside and be active this time of year."

A valid Texas fishing license is required for people 17 years of age and
older, with a limit of 5 trout per day and no minimum length or weight.
For additional information, call 817-598-4124.

WILDLIFE!
When you visit Holland Lake Parks, be sure to bring your duck food or bread crumbs! The ponds are called home by several friendly resident ducks that love to be fed!

PLAYGROUND!
Holland Lake Park also offers a playground, picnic tables, and grills for your use.

SPECIAL EVENTS!
Holland Lake Park is also the location of the annual Movies in the Park held in June. The public restroom facility and concession area offers the perfect site for an outdoor movie and tons of family fun. The event is always free to the public.

"DECK THE WALLS"

Dustin Reichelt and Roger Johnston of the
Parks and Recreation Department hang lights downtown.
The Lights are on in Historic Downtown Weatherford!

It takes a lot of planning, organization, and hard work to bring the Christmas spirit to Historic Downtown Weatherford; however, the City of Weatherford Main Street Program and Parks and Recreation Department have gone above and beyond this year with additional lighting and garland.

As the Courthouse is the property of Parker County, the City of Weatherford Parks and Recreation Department is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the four quadrants surrounding the courthouse. Therefore, in working through the 2010-11 budget cycle, the City of Weatherford's Main Street Program utilized every tiny bit of savings possible to begin enhancing the decorations already in place.

"One of the most common complaints I have heard over the last two years since the city has been recertified as a Main Street Community, is the lack of Christmas lights in our downtown," said Main Street Manager, Kim Theme. "From purchasing to the labor of hanging holiday lighting, Christmas lights are probably one of the most expensive decorations you will find. By off-season savings and partnering with the many assets of our organization, we were able to take the first step to bringing more light to the downtown. With a couple of additions each and every year, my hope is that downtown Weatherford will be on everyone's destination list for the holidays."

The lights are set on automatic timer and will be lit each evening 5:00pm to 10:00pm and also every morning 5:30 am to 8:30 am.

Weatherford Main Street Program Receives National Recognition!
Texas Main Street Program State Coordinator Debra Farst left and Deputy Executive Director for the Texas Historical Commission Terry Colley, right, present Main Street Manager, Kim Thieme with the National Recognition Award.
The Texas Historical Commission and the National Trust for Historic Preservation recently announced that the City of Weatherford received National Recognition as a Main Street Community for the second consecutive year. Cities selected as National Main Street communities must show above average performance in 10 categories focusing on planning, staff and volunteers, preservation ethic, training and individual program assessment.

"We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we've also come a long way in a very short period of time," commented Main Street Manager, Kim Thieme. "The most difficult thing to remember is that Downtown Revitalization is not a process that happens overnight; it takes time, volunteers, and lots of patience. We look forward to what the next few years will bring."
